Definitely off the beaten track, we think Keepers Cottage is the perfect retreat for wildlife enthusiasts who want to get away from it all. This unique detached sandstone house, formerly part of High Head Castle Estates, was built in 1907 for the Gamekeeper. The nearby High Head Castle once included the gatehouse, stables, coach house, chapel, mill and farm. The wildlife gardens are surrounded by private woodlands and fields.
Nominated a ‘Local Wildlife Site’ in 2006 by Cumbria Wildlife Trust, the woods are home to red squirrels, deer, owls, badgers, kingfisher, heron and abundant flora that can easily be seen from the cottage. In the 1960’s the then owner of the farm planted the conifer woods (part of Park Wood) for his grandson. Originally, they were part of the Forest of Inglewood; the Royal Forest designated after the Norman Conquest and hence shows many of the ancient woodland indicators such as bluebells and other flora.
There are lovely views to the Northern Lake District Fells of Blencathra, Carrock and Caldbeck and pleasant walks from the doorstep.
If you want to see the cottage from a different perspective visit the stone circle that is visible on the horizon. Stand in the garden at sunrise and you might see it rise directly above the circle!
If you are ever tempted to leave our peaceful haven then it is an excellent base for cycling, walking and exploring the Lake District, the Eden Valley, Hadrian’s Wall and the Historic City of Carlisle. We are committed to care of the environment and the development of an Eco-friendly cottage for future generations to enjoy. We have used profits from the business to fund projects such as solar panel installation, tree planting, fruit and native deciduous tree planting and any other projects that will help the environment.
